What should a car battery voltage be under load. The no load (everything off) battery post voltage should be at least 12.6 volts and as high as 13.8 volts. If the voltage instantly drops to 0 volts, that is also a problem. Measuring your car battery’s voltage can be a great way to determine how charged your battery might be.

The temperature outside affects the voltage of the battery. If the battery begins to hold and then steadily drops in voltage, there is a problem. Checking the voltage can be misleading because the battery may test well based on voltage but can not hold a load.

You will be far better served to begin recharging at 12.2v or greater because your average discharge rate will be lower and you will also have cyclic loading of the battery which can artificially inflate a voltage to.
